Most people use Telegram as a plain chat app and never open the settings screen. These ten features take five minutes to set up and change how you work.
Most people install a messenger, send messages, and stop there. Telegram keeps a surprising amount of capability behind one gear icon — folders, scheduled sending, a personal cloud drive, per-chat notification rules. Here are the ten that pay for themselves fastest.
Your own chat with yourself is a private, unlimited cloud store. Drop a PDF on your phone, open the same chat on your laptop two minutes later, and the file is there. Forward any message into it to bookmark it instead of screenshotting. Search inside it like any other chat.
Settings → Folders lets you build tabs: Work, Family, Channels, Crypto. Each folder has its own include/exclude rules, its own unread badge and its own mute state. Chats can live in more than one folder, and you can add folders to the top bar as tabs so switching is one tap.
Right-click the send button (or long-press on mobile) and choose Schedule Message. Schedule the Monday morning status update on Friday afternoon, or schedule a birthday message weeks ahead. Scheduled messages live in a list you can edit or cancel any time.
Sending a message at 2 a.m.? Long-press send and pick Send Without Sound. The recipient receives it normally but no notification fires. Good for teams spread across time zones.
Chats pin to the top of the list, but individual messages pin inside a conversation, and pinned messages appear in a bar at the top with a tap-through list. For a group that runs on decisions, a pinned message is the cheapest documentation system that exists.
Mute a chat, then open its notification settings and enable exceptions: mentions only, pinned messages only, or a preview-free alert. This is the difference between a 200-person group being useful and being noise.
Search supports filters: from:, in:, has:media, has:links, dates, and file types. "from:Anna has:document" finds the invoice Anna sent six months ago without scrolling a single screen.
Start a message on your phone, get distracted, open the desktop app — the half-written text is there with a "Draft" label. Telegram syncs the composer state, not only sent messages.
Settings → Privacy and Security → Two-Step Verification adds a password on top of the SMS code. Without it, anyone who receives your SMS can take the account. Turn it on, store the recovery email, and set an automatic self-destruct timer for inactive accounts.
Settings → Advanced → Export Telegram Data produces a full archive: chats, media, contacts, in HTML or JSON. Useful for compliance, for migrating a channel, or simply as a backup you control.
Folders plus pinned messages plus per-chat exceptions change the shape of the app more than any single new feature. Set up folders once, pin one decision per group, and mute everything that does not need you immediately. The rest of Telegram's surface area can wait until you need it.
